Mleep
is Michael Orland, an up-and-coming electronic musician
from Westminster, California. With 6 releases on IVDT,
he has been here since our beginning but little is known
about this mysterious character. Now, in an attempt to
get to know him and his music a little better, we asked
him the following 12 questions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#1.
How & when did you start making music?
I messed around w/ my aunts piano and organ when I was a
kid, but my 1st recordings were on cassette from around
1994-95. I had a Roland MC-303, Yamaha CS1x and a cheap
ass sampler attached to a dj mixer and cassette deck. Still
have those tapes too heh.
#2.
How would you explain the Mleep sound?
Elevator
music from the year 3000.
#3.
What does your music studio setup consist of?
Desktop
PC and a bunch of software including Acid Pro, Sound Forge
and Fruity Loops. Ive got a bunch of new softsyths and
plugins recently.

#4.
What piece of software/hardware in the Mleep arsenal can
you absolutely not live without?
Probably
Sound Forge or Acid Pro.
#5.
What is the typical process in creating a Mleep tune?
I
usually make some melodies or beats in Fruity Loops, add fx
in Fruity, then edit them in Sound Forge. Then I look for
a cool vocal sample or clip from Youtube etc. Then I put it
all into Acid and build a song. I actually chop up beats even
further in Acid sometimes.
#6.
Can you share a production tip or trick?
Never throw anything away or erase wav files...you never know
when you might use it later. Also dont force it...If im not
feeling it I dont even try to make a tune.
#7.
How did the whole Potwhore project come about?
From my love of gabber and breakcore. Some of Mleep stuff
gets crazy but w/ Potwhore I can go totally nuts if I want
to.
#8.
You have a very plunderphonic approach to your music; what
are
your views on the whole copyright thing?
If I was famous and someone sampled me I would take it as
a compliment. Alot of my newer Mleep tunes have none/very
few copyrighted samples in them though (especially the beats).
Potwhore on the other hand will always have movie and song
samples cuz thats what gabber/breakcore is based upon.

#9.
I know you're into comics. What comics are you currently
reading?
Talent (best concept for a comic since Runaways IMO), Stormwatch
PHD, The Boys, The Other Side, DC Countdown, Runaways, Jonah
Hex, Union Jack, New Avengers, Girls, World War Hulk, The
Exterminators, Ex Machina, Y The Last Man (to name a few).
#10.
What is the typical weekend for Mleep like?
Go
swim in the pool or hit the beach (Huntington Beach),
hit a record store or comic shop w/ friends then at night
I chill out and play some video games like World of Warcraft,
watch Adult Swim or Howard Stern, etc. No drinking or
partying or nightclubs...yes Im old and boring, I know.
#11.
For those living in or visiting the Los Angeles area, where
are the best places to buy music or see a live show or hear
a dj spin?
Honestly Im so out of the club loop I dont even know anymore.
I know L.A. still has some decent experimental shows and
underground hip hop..I really need to get out to shows more
often.
#12.
And finally, the staple last question, Where, in the Los
Angeles area (or actually anywhere in the world), are some
not-to-be-missed restaurants that people should be aware
of?
For
a quick bite The Flame Broiler or Osio is best for teriyaki
chicken (Osio has california Rolls and sushi too). There
are several Flame Broilers all over so cal. Roscoe's Chicken
and Waffles in Long Beach kicks ass too. Chicago Rib Company
in Fountain Valley is good. My fav place to eat though is
at various buffets in Las Vegas.
